Sermon Guide
Philippians 2:1-11 • April 26, 2026

Sermon Outline

BIG IDEA
Pride originates and grows in the mind, so it can only be conquered by changing the way we think.

OUTLINE
4 ways to change your thinking in order to kill pride in your life…

  1. Embrace Your Identity (v. 1)

  2. Envision the Bigger Picture (v. 2)

  3. Elevate Others (v. 3-4)

  4. Emulate Christ (v. 5-11)

CALL TO RESPOND

Change your mindset across the following categories of life:

Group Discussion

  1. Before coming to group, look up the passages in the chart above and understand how they connect to the mindset listed.

  2. Do you think it is possible to actually live so as to "Do nothing from selfishness..." (Phil 2:3)? Why or why not?

  3. If total self-forgetfulness isn't the point ("not merely...but also"), where is the line dividing appropriate self-concern and sinful selfishness? (Phil 2:4)

  4. Identify some characters in the Old Testament where their pride or their humility drove the storyline. Does pride or humility drive your storyline?

DIRECT APPLICATION

  1. Considering the chart above, which areas do you tend to exhibit a prideful mind? Outside of Philippians, which Bible verses can help you "put off" the old mind and "put on" the new in those areas?

  2. In your personal relationships, what does it mean for you to "regard one another as more important than yourself"? What good thing that is "rightfully yours" is God calling you to surrender in order to be like Christ for the good of others and the glory of God? Outline practical steps you and your group can take to pursue the mind of Christ.
